Smoke free legislation

More than 79,000 adults die each year as a result of passive smoking in the 25 countries of the EU.

A total of just over 19,000 of the deaths are among non-smokers.

On 29th March 2004 Ireland became the first country in Europe to implement a comprehensive ban on smoking in enclosed workplaces, including hospitality venues (i.e. bars and restaurants).

Since then many European countries have adopted or implemented smoke free legislation.

These include:

- Ireland
- Norway
- Italy
- Spain
- Sweden
- Luxembourg
- France
- Scotland
- Belgium
- Iceland
- Malta
- England
- Lithuania
